I'm Kimberly (Kim) Schoon and I own the *new* children's shoe store in Oakhurst, One Step at a Time KIDS.
Like many of you, I'm a mother. Like many over 40, we struggled with infertility. Evie is our miracle baby- 3 rounds of IVF, several miscarriages, and the sole survivor of a triplet pregnancy. I'm a molecular biologist/bioinformatician/clinical trials by education and experience (worked at Emory, CDC, and Quintiles), but quickly realized that I could not work the long hours required of my career AND still have enough left to be a good mother and wife. My husband also works long hours in a demanding job without much flexibility. Something had to give. We live in Oakhurst/Winnona Park and I was looking for an opportunity close to home with a more family-friendly atmosphere.
Our daughter was 8 mo at the time and was starting to pull up. I could not find any children's shoes around here unless I drove into Buckhead, up to Perimeter Mall, or ordered from Zappos or Amazon. And so, One Step at a Time KIDS was born on May 1, 2015. We carry quality everyday children's shoes (infant, first walkers, toddlers, youth) as well as Stride Rite socks, rainboots, bookbags, and umbrellas. Some of the brands carried are Pediped, Robeez, See Kai Run, Jambu, Umi, Livie & Luca, Tsukihoshi, Chooze, Plae, Native, Mizuno, Western Chief, Kid Express, Rachel Shoes, Teva, Hatley, and Sun San Saltwater Sandals. I offer free sizing and welcome special orders. I personally size & fit each child. At this time, we are brick and mortar only (no online ordering).
Some of you may have already met Evie- she's with me in the store about 2 hrs/day in the late afternoon/evening after her nanny share is over. The arrangement is not perfect, but it allows me to see my child for several hours every day.
Also, we collect and used shoes year round! Either sex, all types of shoes, and all ages (infant to adult). We clean them up an/or repair them, then donate them (or recycle them into playground chips), as appropriate.
